Canonbury is a lovely residential part of Islington located between Essex Road, Upper Street and Cross Street and on both sides of St Paul’s Road. It is home to some of the best properties in Islington and offers easy access to Regent’s Canal.

As you wander through Canonbury’s beautiful streets, it can be hard to believe you are so close to the City and central London.

Canonbury is renowned for its large Georgian properties, many of which have been converted into apartments. The most prestigious homes tend to be the fine period properties in and around Canonbury Square, Canonbury Grove, and Alywne Villas. 

The neighbourhood is extremely popular with families but is also attractive to younger people due to its proximity to the cafés, bars, restaurants and entertainment on offer in and around Upper Street. 

Location and transport links

One reason for Canonbury’s enduring popularity is its closeness to the City, Shoreditch, Hoxton, Clerkenwell and King’s Cross, and its excellent transport links. Angel on the Northern Line and Highbury & Islington on the Victoria line and Overground, as well as numerous bus routes, offer quick access across London. Essex Road on the Great Northern lines is one stop from Old Street and two from Moorgate.

Shopping, eating out and entertainment

Canonbury benefits from all the amenities Islington has to offer. There is a Waitrose and Sainsbury’s on Liverpool Road as well as several local shops, bars and restaurants.

Green space and activities

The nearest  green space is Highbury Fields, which as well as being ideal for family picnics, sunbathing and dog walking is also home to the excellent gym and sports facilities of Highbury Leisure Centre. Nearby Regent’s Canal is a great place for a leisurely stroll or cycle ride.

Schools

Canonbury falls within Islington Local Education Authority and has a number of quality primary schools, secondary schools and academies. All told, there are 47 primary schools and 10 secondary schools and academies in the area with many rated as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted and several rated as ‘good’.
